The rocks are generally unmetamorphosed, unmineralized sandstones, limestones, shales and coal measures ranging from Devonian to Permian in age. Coal mines, clay pits, and various crushed stone operations provide the main geological resources produced in the county.

NONCOAL SURFACE MINES Noncoal is defined as any mined commodity that is not coal or peat, and is referred to as nonfuel or industrial mineral. Noncoal includes aggregate used in blacktop, concrete, amp plaster, clay, and stone, as well as other minerals. At the end of 2019, there were 284 noncoal mines operating in Maryland.
